Looking for THE BIG WHAT!

Can you be Happily After Retirement, really? What about feelings of being disconnected and alone? What about not having that place where coworkers gather and converse, share and connect over projects, over work, over a lifetime? Or a scheduled reason to get up and get going every day? Or a million other things?

Well for me, retirement is about staying connected to people, organizations, nature and myself. It’s volunteering, working out, hiking, and growing. The growing involves lots of reading, lectures, libraries and silence. The silence allows me to stop the noise and review who I am, what I am and where I am going.

However, for as much as I want you to believe I have it figured out, I do not. I am wanting to be part of something bigger, yet something intimate. I need to have structure but also want the freedom to travel. I search blogs, read magazines and books, attend gatherings and continue to wonder where I belong. Have you figured it out yet? Some people follow their bucket list, others clean their closets. There is no answer to this one – like when we left school and were expected to get a job. Now we are leaving a career and what…?

I am looking for THE BIG WHAT?

Whether I write this blog or not, life goes on either way. The sun still rises and it’s glorious. Sometimes I capture the scene on my camera but I would rather just sit in awe and soak it in. Maybe I’ll blog about the colors, the smells and try to describe the fresh air but I’d rather take that hike up the hillside with friends. With you.  What are your wants?

Marianne Williamson wrote so eloquently “We are all meant to shine, as children do.” And now, as we enter retirement, we are also allowed to shine. Duties and responsibilities are winding down and options are on the horizon.

I’m not the only one that feels like this, am I? So, how do we connect?  What is it that you do with your time that makes you giggle with anticipation of it?

There are so many ways to expand my horizons and not even leave my couch. Which is so good … and not good at all! Movement is necessary in so many ways. Trust me on this one. Action is the key to life.

Bradley Whitford wrote this brilliant passage…

“Infuse your life with action.
Don’t wait for it to happen.
Make it happen.
Make your own future.
Make your own hope.
Make your own love.
And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen… yourself, right now, right down here on Earth.”

Get busy living… a reminder from my favorite movie – Shawshank Redemption –
Get busy living or get busy dying !
What shall it be my friends?

Time To Let It Go

It’s over.

November is over and today is the first day of a new month, the last month of the year.

Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth. -Bradley WhitfordFor some reason, November was a tough month for me. I didn’t like the cold snap which took away the colors. And then the time change took away the light. It bothered me and I took it personally.

I did, however, keep busy with a multitude of activities and am proud to say I did most everything on my November list.

The big one on my list was painting my bathroom. I still need to paint the baseboard and door. I’ll put that off as long as I can.

Reading books was easy and I had some good ones that I really enjoyed. I adored reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Something more recent called The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith  (aka JK Rowling). I loved it and look forward to additional books by her.

I met way more than 5 people and I am in the process of joining a group. I hiked on a new trail and was active 5 days out of 7. No colds or flu just a few broken nails.

Thanksgiving Day began with a hike and then was spent with new friends.  I greeted the sun and saw the most colorful skies. And I saw some lovely sunsets too.

I connected with siblings (finally) on Oovoo and there were 3 of us chatting at the same time just last week (Oovoo is like Skype but instead of talking to just one person, you can talk to 2-6 others.)

And now it’s a new month – the last month of 2014. There’s something so sad about saying goodbye to this year. I wish I could understand the melancholy way I’m feeling. I guess I’m not ready for a new year on my doorstep or on my calendar. Funny how the Universe doesn’t care about what I want, huh?!

So, it’s time to let it go and embrace something new. Something new and wonderful? Something new and exciting? Something …

In October, I wrote that in November I planned to write about motivation, health, fitness, fun and things that tickle my fancy.

When I saw this amazing quote to Infuse My Life With Action I knew I was on the right path.

Now to come up with some topics for November. I want to:

  • stay healthy
  • meet 5 new people
  • read 4 books
  • paint my bathroom
  • do something different for Thanksgiving
  • hike a new trail
  • join a group
  • walk more and eat less (except on Thanksgiving when I just want to devour all my comfort foods)
  • connect more on Skype and Oovoo with my family like we did last year.
  • greet the sun and admire a new day.

So, you know what I want to do – what’s on your list? Are you willing to jot down a few things you want to accomplish?  If you want to share I’d love to know what you have planned.
