Why Bother to Blog?

Here we are, 13 weeks into a new year and I’ve got over 100 people following this blog!

I love when my friends comment and I love reading their posts. I’ve gone on emotional journeys, cheered weigh loss and steps walked, sat in amazement over a renovated living room, viewed babies, cathedrals, puppies and desserts.  I’ve read about loss and recovery, despair and hope. I’ve listened to Snow Patrol, seen spring flowers and mountain vistas.

Why bother to blog?

I started blogging as a way to put words into a post. It was hard for me to define my ‘niche’.  I don’t sew, quilt, paint or design.  I don’t lift, run, ride or twirl. And sadly, I don’t strum, fiddle, rock or roll.

I volunteer, play with my grandson, read books, take photos, walk, hike and engage with a wide range of family and friends. I learn, teach, listen and seek out new information through a variety of venues.

I love writing and this blog is a wonderful platform for me. Perhaps my NICHE is being me. Can that be a niche?

I didn’t envision my blog posts to be a ‘no holds barred’ type of place but instead a place where I am sharing bits and pieces of my world, my past and hopes for the future. A place where my humor is able to shine and when I feel down to be able to write freely about that as well. I’ve made friends here and it’s a fun place to be.

Why bother to blog? It feeds my soul, it helps me feel connected, I learn so much, I grow and I enjoy the process.

So tell me, what is it about blogging that you like so much? Why do you do it?

  1. So can be your niche and without a doubt is. How wonderful is that we can share thoughts like this?
I like your reasons for blogging, am touched beyond that words find their way to your heart and then to sharing with the likes of me. Humble me who adores your thoughts put out here to share.

  2. Hi,
Being yourself is exactly what you should be, and in the short time I have been coming to your blog I have enjoyed your posts tremendously. I totally agree that blogging is a great way to connect to people from all over the world, I also have learned so much from others. 🙂

I think you’re on to something here: ‘You’ being your niche.
I’ve been doing this myself for quite some time, and have yet to mind my niche.
This question is something I’ve asked myself over and over lately — especially when I read other people’s blogs. These last days, I’ve been so close to taking the whole thing down and quit.

  6. Being yourself if the best way to blog. When I started my blog, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I take a lot of photographs and love doing it. So I knew that would be a part of it. I love the freedom blogging brings. The friends, the adventure, the new knowledge. Everyone has their own unique view and that is so special. Keep on being you!

  7. Congratulations, MargeKatherine!! Your blog is an ongoing accomplishment of which you can be very proud. I enjoy your posts, and I think, as long as it feels good to you, keep writing that same kind of post. I reached 100 recently, and I know how great it feels — I’m happy for you!

  8. Isn’t this blogging forum something special? A place to put pictures, share experiences and ideas as a way to engage with others. And the others … oh my! Bloggers from north and south and points east and west. Friends in the US, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia and so many other wonderful places. Each person bringing their unique set of skills with them. Lovely, isn’t it?

  9. Thanks Magsx2! I think the “me” niche came by default. I wanted to blog but didn’t have that platform that targets a certain population. This works for me and keeps me coming back to put my fingers on the keyboard!

  10. Rebekah,

So glad you wrote and am happy you didn’t take it down and quit. Keep it up – and – go back to your original posts and read them again. I’ll bet they will take you back to that time and place and you’ll remember why you wrote each post. That’s the best part of this experience — the journaling aspect of it all. It helps me recall, review and remember a different time and place.

  11. I think the most successful posts are the ones I write for myself. They are genuine, require deep thinking and help me remember an experience. When I read back on them I realize they are the ones I feel the most connected to!

So, blog for ‘you’ and you will always be a success!

  12. Hi Cee,

I think it takes getting one toe in the water to figure out what comes next. Sometimes what we choose works, sometimes it doesn’t… and that’s ok. It’s the act of writing, right?

Yes! Your post here, couldn’t have come in more timely than it did — yesterday was just …bad.
Today, I did the weekly photo challenge and things are looking up again. I think I’ll decide here and now, that my niche is ‘me’ 🙂

  14. I can’t say I have any terribly noble reasons for blogging. Or organized reasons, or focused reasons, either.

First, I find writing posts is a good warmup exercise for writing fiction – my main current goal. And then blogging led to making connections with a variety of other bloggers pretty much all around the world! It amazes me how many interesting people I’ve “met” online in just a few months of regular posting. (Including you, MargeKatherine!)

And definitely, be yourself just as hard as you can. Nobody else can manage that.

  16. You have the perfect reason to blog – you! Everyone loves to read and learn about you and your world and I suppose that’s human nature because all our worlds are so different 🙂

  18. Elspeth’s post directed me here 🙂 and I’m glad. When I realised that most of the blogs I read were personal, it dawned on me that it was ok for normal regular folk to blog. I don’t have to be a writer. I don’t have to be a specialist at anything. I can just tell my story, talk about my life, interests and opinions, and share. I love that I have met people I never would have otherwise, in the real world as well as the virtual world. I count bloggy buddies as friends
